FAQ:
What is orthodontics?
Orthodontics is the branch of dentistry that specializes in the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of dental and facial irregularities. The practice of orthodontics requires professional skill in the design, application and control of corrective appliances and forces to bring teeth, lips and jaws into proper alignment and to achieve facial balance expectations.
Who is an orthodontist?
An orthodontist is a dental specialist who has received additional 3 years of advanced post-doctoral training after 4 years of dental school. Orthodontists have dedicated their practice exclusively to orthodontics. They are experts at moving teeth, helping jaws develop properly and improve the appearance of your smile.
What's the best age to visit an orthodontist?
If you want to improve your smile, then any age can be a good age to see an orthodontist. The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that children first visit an orthodontist at age 7. However, orthodontic treatment is not exclusive to children and teens, with about 30% of our orthodontic patients being over the age of 21. Whether you're considering treatment for yourself, or for a child, any time is a good time to visit an orthodontist. No matter what your age, it is never too late to improve your dental health and smile.
What are braces?
Braces are used by your orthodontist to move your teeth and improve your smile. There are different types of braces to choose from, including:
Metal braces Ceramic (clear) braces Self-ligating braces Lingual braces
Will my teeth straighten on their own as I grow older?
Teeth rarely self-correct and align on their own as you grow and mature.
Do I need any teeth removed for my braces?
Sometimes it is necessary to remove teeth in order to make room for the proper alignment of your remaining teeth, and to improve your profile (facial appearance). It is case by case, and we will discuss all possible treatment options with you before you make the decision. If you require teeth removal, the braces will straighten your remaining teeth and close all the spaces. No one will notice that you have less teeth than before.
